Form 1099-B is issued by brokers to report proceeds from the sale of stocks, bonds, and other securities. It shows what you sold, when, how much you received, and your cost basis (what you paid). You use this information to calculate your capital gains or losses on Form 8949 and Schedule D. Some brokers provide consolidated 1099s that combine 1099-B, 1099-DIV, and 1099-INT information in one document. Watch for corrections — brokers sometimes issue amended 1099s in February or March.
