Whether you're required to file a federal tax return depends on your gross income, filing status, and age — not simply on whether you have a job. For 2024, a single filer under 65 generally only needs to file if their gross income exceeds $14,600 (the standard deduction amount); the threshold is higher for older taxpayers and for married couples. If your income falls below the filing threshold, you have no legal obligation to file a federal return. However, there are good reasons to file even when you're not required to: if federal income tax was withheld from any paychecks, you'll need to file to get a refund; if you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit or the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit, you must file to claim those refundable credits. There are also situations where you must file regardless of income — for example, if you had self-employment net earnings of $400 or more, you owe self-employment tax and must file a return. Some states have different filing thresholds than the federal government.
