People often assume that donating to a political campaign or party is like donating to a charity, but the tax rules are very different. Political contributions, whether to a candidate, a political action committee, or a political party, are never deductible on your federal income tax return. The IRS makes this clear and does not treat political organizations the same way it treats 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. A handful of states have historically offered small credits for political contributions, but these are rare and subject to change. No matter how much you give to a political campaign, you will not see a federal tax benefit from it.
